The Crisis Assessment (CAT) is a screener for children facing life-threatening crises. The CAT is a decision-support and outcomes-management tool in crisis settings. Domains for the CAT include risk behaviors, behavioral and emotional needs, functional needs, juvenile justice, protection, and caregiver resources and needs. The items use a 4-level rating system. A 0 means no action is needed, a 1 reveals a need requiring monitoring, a 2 identifies an interfering need requiring action, and a 3 alerts that the need is disabling and requires immediate action. Items on the screener include questions concerning substance abuse. The CAT uses a 30-day window to ensure youth responses are relevant to current circumstances.

The Crisis Assessment Tool (CAT) is a screening tool that allows for rapid and consistent communication of children facing a life-threatening crisis involving their well-being or the community’s safety. The screener is designed to be a decision support and an outcomes management tool in crisis settings. The CAT is primarily used in mobile crisis response teams and to support decisions regarding psychiatric hospitalization. It is intended to be completed by those directly involved with the youth.

Items on the CAT were chosen because they are relevant to treatment planning and may lead a provider down different pathways for planning actions. Domains for the CAT include risk behaviors, behavioral and emotional needs, functional needs, juvenile justice, protection, and caregiver resources and needs. The items use a 4-level rating system, and the ratings must describe the child, not the child in services. A rating of 0 indicates no need for action at the current time, and a 1 identifies a need requiring monitoring or preventative action. A 2 reveals that a need is interfering with functioning, and action is necessary to address the need. The highest rating of 3 signals the need is disabling and requires immediate and intensive action.

When using the CAT, a 30-day window ensures ratings are relevant to the young person’s current circumstances, but action levels can override the 30 days. Items on the screener include questions concerning substance abuse. Responses to these questions could suggest the likelihood of a co-occurring substance abuse disorder or that the youth presents behaviors influenced by co-occurring issues. These questions are not meant to establish the presence of a disorder but to alert clinicians of substance abuse’s impact on crises.
