Description

In partnership with AttendanceWorks.org, the Ohio Department of Education developed a guide addressing school chronic absenteeism. Since the pandemic, more than 30% of students in Ohio have been chronically absent and missed 10% or more of the school year. School attendance is vital for future success, and research has shown that chronically absent Ohio students are 65% less likely to read on grade level at the end of third grade and 89% less likely to graduate on time. The guide urges schools to think about possible barriers that prevent students from making it to school, whether they feel averse or disengaged from attending school or if families need clarification about why their children must attend school regularly.

The guide provides ways districts and schools can improve student attendance. Everyone can play a role in helping children get to school, and it is suggested schools and districts adopt a multi-tiered approach to improve attendance and engagement. Districts should also monitor school attendance data, develop attendance and positive engagement policies, establish strategic community partnerships, and promote shared solutions for continuous improvement.

Additionally, the guide shares the characteristics and functions of an effective school team to improve attendance. Strategies schools can utilize are provided at each tier of support to better attendance and student engagement as well as create a sense of belonging for everyone in the school.
